Does Diet Cause Acne Breakouts?

How do Foods Affect Acne Breakouts?

The connection between acne breakouts and diet is confusing with a lot of different conflicting information.  There’s a lot of skepticism between the diet/acne connection.  It’s a fact – refined carbs and sugar = more insulin = more hormones = more sebum (oil) = more bacteria = more acne.

Why do Dermatologist Say Acne Isn’t Caused By Diet?

Most dermatologists often say diet has nothing to do with acne.  Many websites say the diet acne connection is a myth.  Why would most dermatologists say diet has nothing to do with acne?  The answer is quite simple, your dermatologist can’t sell you a diet but he or she can sell you lots of skin products and prescriptions with the hope of acne free skin.  There isn’t a lot of money in telling patients what foods to avoid getting acne.  Most studies on what causes acne are funded by drug companies.  Many scientists believe the a typical “Western Diet” is to blame for Acne.

It’s common knowledge that eating refined carbohydrates and sugar leads to a surge in insulin production.  Recent research shows that a surge in insulin production causes production of a “insulin like” growth factor know as IGF-1.  This growth factor encourages the skin to produce large amounts of sebum to be secreted from the Sebaceous Glands.  Sebum is the oily residue on the skin that is responsible for clogging pores and causing acne.

Maintaining stable blood sugar is key to preventing acne breakouts.  Avoid processed foods by eating “whole foods”.  Fruits and vegetables are perfect snack foods.  Avoid all processed foods, processed foods are normally found on the inside isles of your grocery store.  They are typical convince foods that are wrapped up in packages or boxed up.  Processed foods are full of chemicals and generally have low nutritional value and high sodium and fat contents.

Keep in mind that everyone is different.  While some of your friends can eat nothing but fried processed foods and still maintain gorgeous skin, that doesn’t mean that you can.  Some people have a genetic tendency to have acne and fried, processed foods can aggravate the problem.  Diet is just one piece of solving what works for you to clear your acne.
