Top 5 Acne Myths | What Causes Acne?

While most acne myths are harmless, some can actually make your skin worse!  You need to figure out what is the truth and what is a worthless myth.  Knowing the difference can make all the difference.

Acne Myth #1

Myth:  Diet doesn’t cause acne
Truth:  Look around the internet and you will see this false statement everywhere.  There are many scientific studies that confirm diet plays a HUGE roll acne breakouts.  Eating sugar and excessive carbs cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels.  This leads to an increase in Sebum productions and results in more acne breakouts.  Sugary foods and foods high in carbohydrates should be limited.

Acne Myth #2

Myth:  You have acne because you are dirty, have poor hygene, and never wash your face.
Truth:  Taking too many showers, washing your face too frequently or roughly can actually cause more acne.  Facial scrubs can also make your acne worse.  You don’t want to dry up your skin completely so don’t overwash, washing your face and body morning and night should be enough for most people.  If you have dry skin you should wash less.   Wash gently with a product that is specially formulated for your skin type.

Acne Myth #3

Myth:  Only teenagers get acne, don’t worry about it you’ll outgrow acne.
Truth:  Anyone can have acne at any age.  Acne isn’t something only teenagers suffer from.  Acne shouldn’t be allowed to “run its course” either.  There are so many effective acne products on the market right now, there is no reason to suffer acne and open yourself up to getting acne scars.

Acne Myth #4

Myth:  Acne is just a cosmetic disease.  If you are worried about acne you are vain.
Truth:  Of course you want to look your best, who dosn’t.  Seeking out acne cures or preventions does not make you a vain person.  Acne and acne scars not only affect show on the outside but they can also affect your self esteem and cause depression.  You don’t have to suffer from acne, there are products out there that will clear up acne.  There’s no reason so suffer silently with acne.  Being proactive is key to having great looking skin.  Don’t listen to anyone that discourages you from clearing up or seeking treatment for your acne.

Acne Myth #5

Myth:  You will always have acne breakouts because your parents have acne breakouts.
Truth:  It’s true, some people are born genetically pre-disposed to getting acne but you don’t have to accept this fate, you can fight back.  Look at your parents, if they are still battling acne or have a lot of acne scars, then chances are you are pre-disposed to acne.  Being genetically pre-disposed to acne doesn’t mean you have to accept this fate without a fight.  There are so many great acne products and treatments on the maket today, there’s no reason to let acne breakouts control your life.  Prevent acne by caring for your skin, drinking plenty of water, treating your skin gently, and taking vitamins and minerals that promote healthy skin.
